Hello, July!

Hello, July!

Our topic for this week’s Think Write Thursday is to write a post titled “Hello, July”.

For him in vain the envious seasons roll who bears eternal summer in his soul. – Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Old Player

July is the month that I’d like to bottle to open in the middle of January. Imagine it – all those smells of summer, and the sounds of the birds, and all the growing things. July should be preserved with the berries for she is sweet and heady!

And, here we are past the Fourth of July and I’d like to put the brakes on summer. You know, slow it way down and savor every finite detail. It just goes so quickly.

This month will see me complete not one, but two sweaters and perhaps will ring in a bingo or two.

Then there’s that Summer Bucket List that I need to start refocusing on – especially the walking, which has been sporadic at best!

And, maybe – just maybe, if I am lucky July won’t speed by after all!

Want to see what others have to say about July, you will find them all here. If you’d like to join Carole and me for Think Write Thursdays, you can sign up here!

Unraveled Wednesday, July 5

Greetings Unravelers! Yay for short weeks smack dab in the middle of summer, amirite?

Lots of knitting is happening and lots of reading!

My Bingo Card continues to look good!

I finished 2 books this week:

On the Road by Jack Kerouac: I gave this book 5 stars. I listened to it and it was fantastic! How had I never read this book is amazing to me, and I am so glad I can say I have! And, this won’t be the last book of his I read because I found him to be an amazing writer; his way with words is phenomenal. I felt as if I was a passenger along for the ride, and what a ride it was! If you need a Memoir or autobiography for your bingo card this summer, read this! It will not disappoint!

The Zookeeper’s Wife: I gave this book 4 stars. This book takes you to Warsaw in the days leading up to WWII and then through the occupation and into the end of the war. It is beautifully written and powerful. There is much sadness in this beautiful tale though, yet during the horror – goodness happens. A great story!

I had a conversation with Mary last week and made a few changes to my Bingo Card choices. I started listening to South of Broad by Pat Conroy this week and began reading Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon. Both are getting high marks in the starting pages. Wonder Boys is short and I hope to have it done this week!

I am also about half way through Spycatcher and while I’d like to have it done this week, that is doubtful.

A cover all is well in sight!

Now, how about some knitting?

Last Friday, I started my “4 day Stillwater” KAL and I have not touched it since! But, tomorrow that will all change as Steve is heading off to a work event and I will be alone for the weekend. Well, Sherman and I will be on our own might be a better way to put that! So, knitting will kick into high gear and I will have a completed sweater by Saturday, or at least that is the plan! There is an awful lot of knitting to do!

In the meantime, I did knit a bit on the MKAL shawl, but I am still not though Clue #2, so once all the knitting insanity is over, I need to be more diligent with that! And, I have also been slowly plugging away at Stillwater #1, but I really did not do much knitting this weekend. The point of the weekend was not to knit, but rather to enjoy the holiday. And, enjoy we did – lots of good food, a few drinks, and lots of outdoor time! It was the perfect long summer weekend!

How about you? Any good knits or reads this week?

More Important Than Ever

More Important Than Ever

Today is all about traditions. And, this year those traditions seem more important than ever.

It can’t be the Independence Day without listening to Morning Edition’s reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Ever wonder about the science behind those beautiful fireworks we all love? Wonder no more!

And, finally, this poll on civility is so sad, perhaps today we could all practice simply being kind to one another.

Have a very Happy 4th everyone!

When Monday’s are Saturday!

When Monday’s are Saturday!

Greetings from mid-weekend! I know! How awesome is that!

Some things to perk up your Monday:

  1. The Four Day Sweater KAL is in full swing – and Mary is just cruising along! Go, Mary, Go! I am beyond the Great Sweater Divide and will resume knitting on Thursday when Steve heads off for a 3-day work function. Yes, there is a method to me dividing up my time! LOL
  2. Speaking of Mary, she shared this lovely tidbit with me this morning! Yes, I’m still with her – and really, can we all be in a book club together? Perhaps new rules for Presidential candidates should include their reading list, and if they don’t have one – they are automatically disqualified!
  3. I have picked 7 zucchinis, 10 cucumbers, and up today is the first bean harvest!! Gardening FTW!
  4. We had some early sweet corn for dinner last night and yes, it was so delicious!

That is all I have for this Mon-turday! Except this, Monday I think this should be your new plan going forward – BE SATURDAY!

Knitters, Start your Engines!

Knitters, Start your Engines!

Today is CAST ON DAY for the uber-insane Sweater in 4 Days KAL!!

My yarn is caked, I have written this blog post on Thursday so know that my day will be consumed with casting on and knitting as much as I can before Steve gets home from work today. Then, the sweater will have a bit of a rest until next Thursday which will start the close of my knitting marathon.

I hope to get beyond the Great Sleeve Divide! Way beyond!

Now, I am really concerned that this is not at all possible, mainly because of the Bang Out a Sweater insanity… FYI that took me a total of 35 hours from start to finish (which is like 9 hours of knitting time per day… oy). But, I am ignoring that number and just going for it! Either that, or the summer heat has totally fried my poor brain. But, we shall see. I will be sharing progress posts via Instagram, so stay tuned!

OH!!! And Hello LONG weekend! It is a nice 4-day weekend here and poor Monday will actually get some weekend love in my house! Woo hoo!

Now, how about some links?

Protest is Patriotic Shawl is so great! Oh, and it is also gratis!

How many dolls (in your pockets)? I love it! LOL

If you did not hear, Gudrun is now a designer at Brooklyn Tweed! Congrats to you Gudrun!! And, I like Brora very much!

After seeing Mary’s test knit of A Twist to it, I think this will be something I cast on sooner than later! I really love how it looks, and especially how Mary’s turned out!

That is all I have for this last Friday in June! Have a fantastic weekend and I will see you back here on Monday!

When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

This week’s Think Write Thursday topic is to write about what you wanted to be when you grew up. How does it compare to what you find yourself doing?

When I was a little girl all I ever wanted was to be exactly like my Nana. And, perhaps my favorite story about her was this: When my Grandpa was 40 years old he was diagnosed with MS and soon after that diagnosis was unable to work. And, my Nana who had been a “stay home mom” with a 5th grade education, went to Beauty School and became a beautician (they did not call them hairdressers way back then). So, for my entire life, my Nana had a “beauty shop” in her house.

When I was in high school I followed in her footsteps and attended Cosmetology School. I wish I could say that it was fun, but really – not so much. The terror I felt every time I even thought about taking a scissors and cutting someone’s hair was something I could not get over. The thought process of “you will learn as you go when you get into a salon” did nothing to alleviate those fears. Add to that, that doing my own hair was never “easy” and I always felt like I had 2 left hands trying to do anything with it! I never took the boards to get my license.

I have worked as a waitress, a travel agent, an escrow agent, a mortgage loan officer, a regional consumer loan specialist, a recruiter/trainer, and for the past several years I have had the luxury of working from home.

And really, my Nana was right, working from home is an amazing luxury! What’s not to love about working in your pjs and not having to hassle with rush hour traffic!!
