Summer Time and the Eating is Easy…

Summer Time and the Eating is Easy…

Or – Trying to Cook All the Things

I have been trying to take advantage of the bounty of the season of both my garden and the local farmers markets.

I am certainly not short of great ingredients! The trick is to become creative in your use of the season’s bounty, because the same thing day in and day out can get boring no matter how good it is!

I have canned tomato sauce as well as a zippy little version of Rotel-Style tomatoes that will serve us well over the winter months. I have frozen fresh sweet corn that I cut from the cob, and I will be blanching green and yellow beans to freeze as well. I have pickled radishes and cucumbers. I roasted and froze some amazing poblanos and some great jalepenos too!

Beating the heat

Beating the heat

It has been a quiet week here at Casa del KatKnits, with temperatures climbing into the triple digits causing many to hibernate to an air conditioned place to beat the heat.

My garden is growing nicely, even if my lawn looks like the Sahara Desert. We have had little to no rain here, but the bonus of container gardening is easy watering and the ability to move things out of the scorching heat, for which my plants are grateful, I am sure!

With a brief respite from the heat for a few days – it is amazing how cool the 80’s can feel after a stint of 100 plus degree-days. I am enjoying open windows, blowing breezes, and chirping birds.

I have begun my summer knitting project, in preparation/training for the highly controversial Ravelry “Ravellenic” Knitting event. Who knew that knitters could be such a divisive lot? My summer project is the lovely Buttercup by Heidi Kirrmaier, knit out of Elsebeth Lavold’s Hempathy. It is indeed the right yarn to be knitting with on these hot summer days and nights. Now, bring on the Olympics to maximize my knitting time!

Happy Summer all!

Summertime, summertime, sum, sum, summertime…

Summertime, summertime, sum, sum, summertime…

My Bodacious Leader posed some questions to her Bodacious-Wanna-Be’s this week so the focus today is all about summer.

Janey wants to know….

What do you do to get ready for summer? What says summer to you – music, food, clothes, activities, you name it…

Living in West Michigan where the Days of Summer are definitely numbered you will find most of the population here living each summery moment to its fullest. Moreover, with stats like this you can see why:

Almost half of Michigan is comprised of water and, except for Alaska, Michigan has more shoreline than any other state, fronting four of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. With 3,177 miles of Great Lakes shoreline it is easy to see why Michigan boasts a thriving recreational industry, and leads the nation with approximately one million registered pleasure boats.

However, what is a girl to do when she is not counted in the one million registered boaters?

A little dirt therapy

A little dirt therapy

DSCF1940, originally uploaded by As Kat Knits.

It has been a crazy week here at Casa del KatKnits and the weeks end found me needing more than a little therapy.

I found it in the dirt.

Potting soil, that is.

My garden is all set to grow, I have sprinkled a little fertilizer, baptized them all with a goodly sum of water, and they are now soaking up the sun.

Now I am off to scrub under my finger nails… and a much needed fresh start to a new week.
