I read this meme on Janey’s Blog and as there has been little content here recently I thought I’d “recycle” this here, and while I know it is not Monday the encouragement to recycle is a good reminder any day!
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
~Walt Whitman
Do you recycle?
Religiously and have for years. I am fortunate to live in a place that offers curbside recycling. The small price I pay monthly for the privilege to do so is, I believe, part of my responsibility in being a good steward of this planet I live on.
Do you do you laundry with hot or cold water?
Cold!! Furthermore, I dry very few things in my dryer. This is a benefit on a number of levels – clothing lasts longer and I am reducing my energy footprint by doing so.
What kind of light bulbs are in your house?
I would love to tell you that every bulb in my home was fluorescent; sadly, they are not. However, as the candescent bulbs burn out I am replacing them with more eco-friendly fluorescent bulbs even though I do not care for the light they generate.
Do you compost?
No, but I would if it was an option. However, this question is causing me to think about renter-friendly composting options.
What kind of vehicle do you drive?
Sadly, nothing that is fabulously eco-friendly. I would really like to get to the point of driving no vehicle and becoming a rapid transit consumer. As with everything, this is a work in progress…
Do you use plastic or reusable bags when grocery shopping?
Reusable – either Chico Bags or recycled paper bags.
What are three ways you conserve energy?
I am sure there are dozens of ways I could be conserving more, but I try to keep it simple. I am happy to say that my recycled “trash” is a greater volume than my non-recycled trash. My one indulgence remains long, hot showers – so perhaps my cold water washing is canceled out by this selfishness. I am conscious of turning lights off if no one is in the room.
However, what I would like is for you all to share things that you are doing to conserve energy because I am sure there are things that you all are doing that I could be! Leave your conservation techniques in the comments!
This is a good meme!
Do you recycle?
Yes. We recycle as much as we throw away or more than we throw away. We are lucky to live in a community that takes just about everything. Our trash is mostly cat litter, food waste and pizza boxes (which I wish we could recycle). Everything else, plastics, paper of all sorts, cans and bottles all get recycled.
Do you do you laundry with hot or cold water?
99% cold water.
What kind of light bulbs are in your house?
Our house’s light fixtures are not conducive to CFL’s. Most things are either small base or decorative bulbs. As our regular base incandescent die, they are being replaced with CFLs. I’d love to get LED lighting but I can’t afford it. We make up for it by only having lights on in the room we are in, so generally no more than one room at a time.
Do you compost?
No.
What kind of vehicle do you drive?
A big, gas guzzling SUV from last century. I don’t have the cash flow right now to have a car payment, but when I can, a Prius will get strong consideration.
Do you use plastic or reusable bags when grocery shopping?
Both, well all three. We try to use reusables when we can. But on small trips, we take plastic bags. We occasionally will get some paper bags to use to collect our other paper recycling in, then recycle the whole bag. For the plastic bags, we either recycle them when we have enough to take back to the store, or we resuse them. They make great trash bags for the bathroom trash cans. They make great lunch boxes and I even use them as Camera rain-coats! So I don’t feel too guilty about plastic grocery bags.
What are three ways you conserve energy?
1. Keep travel to a minimum. My wife and I share one vehicle and carpool.
2. Use programmable thermostats to keep the heating/cooling to a minimum when we are not there.
3. Keep our lights off as much as we can.
