It’s Tuesday and that means that Carole wants to know:
10 Songs About Where You Live
Hmmm….
About now would be the perfect time to be from Chicago, New York, or San Francisco, but, Pittsburgh???
Now I know lots of songs, but not a single one about Pittsburgh. Thankfully the Google was able to help me out on this one!
Pittsburgh Town by Woodie Guthrie
There’s a Pawnshop on the Corner by Bob Merrill
Ode to Pittsburgh by Louden Wainwright III
Pumping Iron by the Iron City Houserockers
Homestead Town by Mike Stout
Pittsburgh by They Might Be Giants
Dahntahn by Mark Eddie. And really I do not know anyone who talks like this. Promise.
I Love Pittsburgh by Jimmy Sapienza
I’m In Pittsburgh by the Outcasts
And you really can’t do a list of songs about Pittsburgh, and skip the Steelers….
Black and Yellow by Wiz Khalifa
And, one bonus song, from my most loved home town – Holland, Michigan – home of the Tulip Time Festival:
Tulips are Blooming in Holland, Michigan
Personally, these kids singing might be the best thing ever. Do you have a song your city is famous for?
Wow! There sure are lots of interesting songs about Pittsburgh! (But it’s that one about Holland that warms my heart.) Here in Kalamazoo, we’re IN a few songs — but none more famous than “I Got a Gal . . . in Kalamazoo.”
I had no idea there were so many songs about Pittsburgh, and am glad you’ve gathered them here for us. I love Loudon Wainwright and TMBG, and now have lots of fun new things to listen to!
Some of these are real winners, and I’m glad we both had the pawn shop song!
FWIW, I do know a lot of people who say, “Dahntan,” etc.
And surely by now, you’ve encountered some jagoffs, right? 😉
Pittsburgh! (I hear it’s really nice there.)I’ll have to give these songs a listen tonight…as I drag through clue 4. Envious you’re at the bind-off!
Being from the ‘burg’, too….I immediately thought of ‘We are Family’….strongly adopted for the sports season and not exactly about Pittsburgh, but I always associate it with ‘home’. Living now in Paducah….we actually HAVE a Paducah song—sung by Carmen Miranda and performed by Benny Goodman (so you can imagine the era!) It’s pretty funny.
I knew you’d have one about The Steelers!
What a great list of songs, which should provide a mornings worth of entertainment. I’ll start at the top and listen. I could only think of two songs I like, Johnny Mercer’s “I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City” and the Beach Boys “Salt Lake City”.
Yeah, FOOTBALL! 😉
You live in Pittsburgh?! I LOVE that city. I lived there in 1984 and 1985. Our apartment was in Shadyside and I commuted to my job as Editor of the Carnegie Signal-Item. We moved because my husband got a better job. Sigh. Miss it still!
This is fun!
I’d say you hit the Mother Lode! Who knew so many songs were out there? Like Margene, I dinna come up with much for my hometown, either…yet.
Cheers~
