By the time you read this, the ribbon facing will be stitched on and the buttons all sewn in place! Glamor shots coming shortly!
However, the good news is that my Nana’s button collection had oodles of choices. I went with 10 matching buttons (and there are still 5 left for replacements!). This little box is just jam-packed full of buttons of all shapes and sizes!
Some of my favorite are these old shank buttons. Believe it or not, there is an entire bag filled with shanks buttons, with enough for more than a dozen sweaters in need of buttons!
I don’t think that The Button Treasury is still in existence, but don’t you just love the hand typed label? Now my next question is this, why did she order buttons from NYC?
Happy Monday, everyone!
I have my mom’s button box and my nana’s, too, and there are lots of buttons but not many sets of buttons. Yours are awesome!
I’m sure you will be wearing that sweater a lot so you’d better start a new one soon for when that one wears out!
Those buttons are perfect, and it’s even better that they came from your Nana. I love the fishing and ivy shank buttons, and that closeup shows how much beautiful depth of color is in the Plötulopi. I like Rusty more every time I see it!
I have my grandmother’s old buttons — and there are some beauties in there. But not enough of any one kind for a sweater! That fishing button! Oh, heart, be still. . .
I think it is very cool that she ordered her special buttons. The collection is intricate and interesting. Like Bonny, I love the fishing and Ivy buttons best. Your Rusty is going to be such a beauty!
You have some treasures there.
That button collection must be so fun to go through! My mother just gave me a big bag of buttons (they are moving soon, so she’s in full-on purge mode), but I haven’t looked through it yet to see if there’s anything good.
I bet there are lots of knitters who like buttons. And save them, I have my mother’s and my mother-in-law’s, who have been saving since the early 1900’s from their mothers.
Having an old button collection (with enough buttons for your project) is so wonderful. I love the ivy motif buttons, and really, all the rest, too.
The buttons you picked out are going to be perfect for your sweater! I have my grandma’s button box and love using them for my projects. Hers came mainly from worn out clothing and the Woolworths stores that my grandfather managed…if a button fell off a card, he couldn’t sell it, so it was added to her button box.
I’ve got my grandmothers buttons and another collection from a woman I knew. I wonder about the NYC thing too…was there a button catalog? We always made our way through Windsor Button in downtown Boston when I was young shopping with my grandmother and great aunt. We didn’t really buy but checked out all the wares!
I was at Tender Buttons in NYC years ago… AMAZING!! I have my mother’s & grandmother’s collections, and love sifting through them. Can’t wait to see your finished sweater.
The ribbon and the buttons look like a perfect match for that sweater. Why did she order buttons from NYC? Sounds like a good story.
The white buttons you chose for Rusty are perfect (and I love the ribbon, too)! How cool that she ordered buttons from NYC – that must’ve been quite an order for a box that size!
what a treasure! my gram had a big tin of buttons and I don’t know who got them when she died. I fear that they were donated!!! I used to dig through them as a kid 🙂
