There are two seasonal diversions that can ease the bit of any winter. One is the January thaw. The other is the seed catalogs. Hal Borland
January thaw is well upon us and here in Pittsburgh and we achieved temps in the 50’s yesterday. It is supposed to be similarly warm today.
So, here are my three things for today:
Thing One:
Take a nice long walk outside!
Thing Two:
Bring the paper white bulbs in from the garage and get them planted today.
Thing Three:
Start a new gardening page on Pinterest with thoughts and ideas for this year’s garden.
Ahhhh!
Want to see more things that might be a bit more riveting than these? Head over to Carole’s!
Three excellent suggestions for today! Enjoy the warmth while it lasts. . .

I’ve got my pile of seed catalogs on the kitchen table and they are providing happy and colorful reading!
A lovely list
I wish I was more of a gardener — perhaps planning for spring would make me less depressed about the winter!
Our January thaw has been accompanied by steady rain, so no outdoor walking was done and cold weather is set to return later today. I plan to begin perusing my seed catalogs this weekend. Have you ever read Onward & Upward in the Garden by Katharine White (wife of EB White)? It is a collection of New Yorker columns she wrote on seed catalogs…I thought it was fun to read.
Oh enjoy the little taste and tease of spring!
You asked if I had read Pete R’s books. I have not! I will now! Thank you
Those are three great things for managing the January blahs!
Seeds for springtime gardening have been on my mind this week, too! This will be my third year of square foot gardening, and I’m hoping to find some plants that would be pretty cut flowers and/or natural dyes for fiber and textiles to add to it this year. I’d love to hear what you end up putting in your garden!
My weather app tells me that it’s 48F right now (on the way to 50!), but it is so dreary. Tomorrow, we’ll have loads of sunshine… and a high of 16. Sixteen. Hello January!!
Smith and I are going to start planning the garden this week. We want to get our seed orders in right away! I love planning for spring! It was beautiful today and I got a long walk in. Hope you did, too!
We’ve had the same warm-ish California winter weather all season long. I’m hoping we get some more rain soon.
Still “thawing?” T’is humid and wet today and then the big plunge tonight! An afternoon, cold weekend with a bulb/flower catalog sounds like a good way to spend a cold weekend!
Plan on!
Cheers~
ah…thaw sounds wonderful! I just saw we’re supposed to be in the 50’s by next weekend. Hopefully that’s true!
Those are 3 great things for a winter day!
Fabulous sweater! (I just saw your new photo at the bottom of your page. You are goreous!)
