“Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.
Farewell, fellow Americans. God bless you, and God bless America.” – John McCain
Senator McCain seemed to have impeccable timing in life and in death and while I did not always agree with his politics, I had deep respect for this man who gave so much to this nation.
The nonsense about flags yesterday set off my anger and my outburst at the news did not make me feel any better. But, then Mr. Davis read the Farewell Statement from Senator McCain and I realized that what position flags were in did not diminish the man that Senator McCain was nor the respect that this grateful nation has for him.
In death, he has lifted us all up with words that are both profound, comforting, and yes, inspiring. I am so glad that you, in the words of Dylan Thomas, “did not go gentle into that good night.”
Rest in Peace, Senator McCain.
An awful lot of senators and congressmen (and women) could learn from his example.
We may disagree, but it does not mean we have to be disagreeable.
I second your thought ….. R.I.P Senator McCain. You will be missed.
The flag situation just illustrates (again) (sigh) what a deplorable person the current occupant is. Senator McCain was a good one, that’s for sure, and he earned the respect of this nation.
We still have so much to learn.
I’ve had to turn off the news recently because I just couldn’t stand it any more, but turned it on again to be reminded of what a fine human being John McCain was. His farewell statement, his choice of people to deliver eulogies, his admissions of past mistakes and regrets, and a lifetime legacy of service to the country is something we all need to remember, and I truly hope that Republicans especially remember his actions and deeds.
I find it very telling that the people who seem to be praising him and his service are overwhelmingly Democrats. It just shows what a despicable bunch many of those Republican are (especially the one in the White House — how petty can you get?). I disagreed with McCain on many issues, but you can’t disagree with someone so dedicated to serving their country.
He’s a hero to me. Just the way he faced his death is amazing enough.
A great post, Kat – thank you!
well darn it – I meant to also say “for a great man”! (and still – thank you!)
We shall overcome! (she says with every thing she can cross, crossed!) I, as you, have great respect for John McCain, since 2008. He made a horrible choice fora running mate but certainly maintained his integrity, compassion and respect.
This is a lovely tribute to a decent person. Thank you!
Amen. The difference in leaders is never more apparent. While I didn’t always agree with Senator McCain I respect him. He was a person of integrity and I will miss him.
I did not necessarily agree with his politics, and I didn’t think he was right for the presidency, but he was an honorable and honest man deserving of every praise and bit of respect we can give him.
We saw him in a small town meeting in NH early in his first campaign. I’m glad to have been able to do that. He was an American hero. RIP sir.
