December’s wintery breath is already clouding the pond, frosting the pane, obscuring summer’s memory. ―
Hello dear December… I feel both that it took you no time and a long time to arrive. And I find that is much of what you are about… holding two opposing thoughts together at the same time.
Cold is synonymous with December and those balmy summer nights seem like another lifetime ago. I do love the hushed stillness of a dark winter night. And though Sherman’s evening walk might be colder… the delight of all the twinkling lights of December in the neighbors yards makes our evening stroll one I very much look forward to! Granted, the noisy whir of the motors powering the “blow up” decorations overpowers the quiet, I still appreciate the neighborly efforts that make for a very festive walk.
But I do have some things that I both need and want to accomplish this month:
- Knit a few more wee Gnome Ornaments. They are a fun and easy knit… so their completion is not daunting and entirely doable this month.
- My December Mystery Gnome… the last clue always comes on the 24th… and I look forward to the way Sarah helps me ease toward that day!
- Swatch for a vest for Steve. I found a pattern which might be the backwards way to go about this… but he is so picky about clothes that finding one he likes was the biggest hurdle. I have the yarn, now I just need to “make it work”… which I am confident I can as long as I am close!
- Test drive a new schedule for The Making of the Sourdough Bread… I am testing out the new schedule this weekend, so hopefully my “time” math works for a Sunday morning bake!
- Paint… my class has started and I have my first lesson “masked” and ready to go. It is the ONLY thing on my list today! Yes, I am nervous! Haha
And I think that is MORE than enough for any December! What about you? What are you hoping to accomplish this month?
Have a great weekend, everyone! See you all back here on Monday!
It’s funny you mention the hum of motors and fans. I took a walk last night, thinking it would be quiet but I felt accosted by that slightly aggravating noise almost everywhere. I’m glad that leaf-blower season is over, but we have definitely entered the season of the electric motor. Your plans seem gentle and well-thought-out, without frenzied Christmas knitting. I hope you have a lovely December!
I haven’t heard any blow-up motors in my neighborhood, but we are still fully in the grip of leaf blowers, which I hate. I hope we’re done with that soon! And if we have to have cold coming, I am glad for the twinkly lights that make the darkness a little easier to take.
I am excited to be gnoming along with you this month! I signed up for the mystery gnome for the first time and plan to knit a Chanukah gnome for my gnome-obsessed brother. I just have to decide on my colors and wind my yarn.
I am working on meal planning for the holidays (and for regular days too).
Right now both kinds of needles (knitting AND cross stitch) are empty. I need to remedy that.
Have a wonderful time at your painting class. First day jitters are okay.
Those blow up decorations annoy the piss out of me! Give me some twinkle lights and/or candles in the windows, a bit of greenery (and red berries) and I’m good to go! My goal for this December is to not be crazy! LOL No pressure on my knitting or baking or wrapping or anything. We are taking Colin & Mailing out to dinner (a very nice-looking and sounding French restaurant nearby) when they return to celebrate their birthdays. I started wrapping gidts yesterday that need to be mailed out, so I feel like I’m on track to have a relaxing holiday season.
A festive, joy-filled list! (Not to mention that header…which just makes me ITCH to make-and-create.)
I find myself struggling, already, with the lack of sun. (NONE in our 10-day forecast.) At 5pm last ‘night,’ Linc commented on the pitch dark outside the window. I pointed out that in peak summer at the lake, we’d have almost 5 more hours of light! So it’s ‘make your own sunshine’ time here. That will look like stitching repurposed linens and working granny spikes on a blanket. And packing up a giftbox to beat the P.O. rush! Sending packages brings me so much sunshine, and hopefully the recipient, too. ♥
I love the top photo of your painting ( i think?) Your December list seems manageable. I need to get going with my mail order shopping. I volunteered to make a mother/daughter set of aprons for my daughter to give as a gift so I’m working on them this week. My sewing skills are a little rusty. I’m making plans for baking and my winter reading list. My aim for December/Advent is to mindfully wait for winter and to be content, as in what we have is enough. Wish me luck.
That’s a list full of creative wonders! Here’s to a December that brings you joy as you knit and paint!
A perfect list for the month, Kat! XO I, too, love all the twinkle lights and colorful decorations outside. I wish more people would leave them up right through January! We have a more than a few whirring motors in our neighborhood, too. (Thankfully, none of my direct neighbors.) I’m not sure why these things are so popular, but each to his own! JoJo – who adores cold weather (it’s deep in her DNA) – is sending warm thoughts to poor Sherman. XO
I am thrilled it is december, a wonderful month!! I have shopping still to do but I hope I am strategic enough to get it done this week…we shall see.
