Greetings dear Unraveler’s and Happy Wednesday!
My gratitude-seeking has continued this week and, thankfully, there is always so much to be grateful for with making and reading!
I discovered last week that (almost) mindless stockinette is not the best project when you need to keep your mind occupied. Yes, I have knit exactly nothing on my Shakerag Top…mindless knitting = doom thoughts and all the worrying.
Thankfully, I had a bit of something in my stash that would require all the concentration… two stunning skeins of yarn dyed by the genius of Tina of Freia Fine Handpaint yarns paired with some brain engaging mosaic knitting with the Ocean Waves Cowl. Lots of engaging the brain on this pattern… there are two charts you alternate on each round! I have just a few rows to go and the cowl will be finished… just in time to begin knitting baby blankets!
And I will get back to my Shakerag Top… soon, very soon!
The reading has been of the “escapist” variety for me this week. I went from the South of France with Bruno to a book that Vera mentioned last week… Anna Pitoniak’s The Helsinki Affair. I am a few chapters in and already it is impossible to put down! Thank you, Vera for such a fantastic recommendation!
And, if I can keep my eyes open at the end of the day, I am reading Dorothy Armstrong’s Threads of Empire: A History of the World in Twelve Carpets. If you like history, textiles, and the stories behind them… pick up this fascinating book. The first chapter about the Pazyryk rug that dates back a couple thousand+ years blew me away. And chapter two is equally riveting with a riveting discussion on S and Z twist in another rug! A book about textiles and history might not make you swoon but I am loving every bit of it!
What things are you grateful for this week?
As always, if you wrote a post to share please leave your link below and thank you!

Your cowl looks amazing!! I’m looking forward to the FO post showing it in all its glory. So glad you are enjoying The Helsinki Affair – I have not read it yet, but I will (it’s one of the books my brother recommended). Threads of Empire sounds very interesting – I’m going to see if my library has it. Thanks for the recommendation!!
Your Ocean Waves cowl is gorgeous! I love the design and the yarn you chose; I’m glad you found such a lovely and creative way to keep your brain occupied. I also love the colors for your baby blankets and will be looking forward to seeing how you use them. A very good knitting and reading week for you!
I’ve been admiring the Ocean Waves pattern, you’ve sped through yours! I completely agree on stockinette not taking my mind off anything. I’ve said it before – I can knit and worry at the same time 😂
What a perfect project, Kat! Love the design; love the colors! So glad you found some knitting that could be a comfort for you last week. XO
I am grateful for being able to help out our daughter and for my body surviving it. I am grateful after TWO weeks of painful eating I am now pain free (hopefully for a while…). Love the projects!!
That looks like a fabulous project to keep your mind engaged! I am feeling very grateful for air conditioning right now — this heat and humidity is serious!
The cowl looks gorgeous. I agree sometimes the mindless knitting does lead to my mind engaging in more worry. I am grateful for fresh cherry tomatoes, the library, and sparkling raindrops visible this morning.
I guess we’re all different when it comes to distracting projects – if my mind is elsewhere there’s no way I can concentrate so plain knitting it would be
Those are the softest of colours to use for baby blankets – looking forward to seeing what you have in mind
