… is time for action!
I have basically given up on using the 5Calls app… I don’t know about you, but while my representative is very eager to hear from his constituents, neither of my senators are. And my local representatives are both doing very good work in my area for me and my neighbors.
But!!!
Thanks to a bit of a power outage here on Sunday morning I spent a good bit of time “doomscrolling” IG and stumbled across Kate_forthepeople. So, yes, I am making calls this week to Mr. Schumer and Mr. Jeffries to make sure they hear from me on the looming budget crisis. (My thoughts on a shutdown are that frankly it should be shut down, but I think Kate’s points on trying to claw back some power from SCOTUS is worthwhile to giving some votes to the GOP, if and only if there are some implementations of the exceptions clause in the constitution. (You can read more about the exceptions clause by Googling Article iii, section two… I am not linking explanations, but there are dozens. Suffice it to say, that in “olden times” congress actually used their power to set the cases before SCOTUS.)
You can watch Kate’s compelling (and oh so easy) call to Mr. Schumer’s office regarding the exceptions clause in the constitution below. She also has a Substack post where she includes more information and the switchboard number. She also calls Justice Alito an illiterate idiot… which made me laugh right out loud! Her Substack is absolutely a worthwhile read!

I hope you will join me in calling these two Professional Letter Writers this week and encourage them to get off dead center, stop writing nice letters and DO SOMETHING!
Happy Monday everyone!

I don’t make calls (I really hate talking on the phone), but I’ve sent emails plenty, and the responses from our senators, if there are any, leave a lot to be desired. Is Chris Deluzio your rep? If so, you’re lucky — I like him a lot. I’m glad you were able to make some good use of your doomscrolling time! (And what’s with a power outage on a perfectly calm Sunday morning?!)
As someone in MA, I sometimes feel like I can’t do much to sway change as my reps are all on the right side of history. But this is a good action call. Thanks, Kat.
Thanks for the action recommendations, Kat. These days, I often think of Einstein’s quote, “How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will!” I think I have to help create that island by making some calls.
Great ACTION suggestion, Kat! (Bravo!) Like you, I have tired of the 5 Calls app, although I used it a lot in the “early days.” I’m lucky to have two D senators, my rep? He doesn’t take calls anymore . . . not even voice mails. Anyway. I think your suggestion today is worth a try!
Thanks, Kat.
The comments are interesting. I live in a little blue dot in a big red state so have two senators and one rep that are staunch Republicans. There responses are so canned and frustrating although Mike Flood is at least willing to get up in front of a town hall. I still send plenty of email.
