Greetings dear Unraveler’s!
Who else was glued to the YouTube feed of the Artemis II as they headed around the dark side of the moon on Monday? I unleashed my inner eight year old as I could not turn it off and was glued to every moment of it! It was just as spectacular as the first time I watched All Things Lunar way back in 1968. Anyways, Artemis II has been an unbelievable bright spot in the exploding dumpster fire that describes how I feel about all the other shite that is everything else. The beading continues each morning… it is a ritual that is perfect for early morning. Unrushed, slow, thoughtful. One length of thread and some beads and my thoughts… I am not certain anything can be better than this! I am nearing completion of this fancy little bandana and I am going to wear the hell out of it! It’s so Bling-y that I bet they would be able to see it from the Artemis II! Ha!
Waffle Pullover-ing has not been happening. That’s right, I have not picked it up once… sigh. However, I am still mosaic knitting… just on a lighter fabric. Yes, I pulled out the floatiest scarf on the planet and have been trying to get a full repeat done whilst watching some television each night. I am so close to the half way point… so, so close!
There was a bit of wild excitement in my backyard late last week… we recently changed the suet cakes (or rather the place we get suet cakes changed what they have) and the birds have liked the change. Last Thursday morning, I was just beading away and I heard the distinctive call of a Pileated Woodpecker!! In my yard!!! I looked out the window by my desk and I could see it clearly on the telephone pole in the back corner of our yard! He tried valiantly, but not successfully, to sample the suet that all the birds were so excited about! IN MY YARD!! So yes, I instantly headed to the Google™ to find a Pileated Woodpecker sized suet feeder! I found one and it arrived on Monday! However… I have been trying to figure out where the heck I can hang it… I mean this is a BIG suet feeder! Big and heavy… so I might need to get a reinforced something to hang it on! Hang in there, my dear Pileated friends… I am working on getting you some Suet Access! Really! I am working on it!
No book finishes this week, but the reading has been so good… I am listening to David Morse read Allen Levi’s Theo of Golden and I am loving it so much… I don’t want to rush through it at all. I have been stitching while listening to it … the perfect pairing!
At night, in the few moments before I turn off the lights, I have been reading the latest and final book in the Cal Hooper Trilogy. It is as good, if not better than the previous two novels! I am just over halfway through and will be sad to see the Cal Hooper story come to an end!

Initially, I was wondering why we were flying by the moon after all these years, but I was also spellbound by everything Artemis II did. I’ve also loved the quotes from Artemis II that were already being embroidered by the Tiny Pricks Project participants. Your beading is stunning and I’m glad you’re going to wear the hell out of it. You and your beautiful bandanna deserve to be seen! I hope you can figure out somewhere to put the giant suet feeder – anything to increase the wild excitement in your yard. What exciting bird news!! I had no idea you would need a different (BIGGER) suet feeder for your new friend. Your beading…marvelous! It’s nice to read that your morning stitching time brings you such joy. I’m in queue (a terribly long queue) for Theo of Golden and have put the Cal Hooper Trilogy on my TBR list. I don’t think I’ve read anything by Tana French!!
Like Bonny, I didn’t really understand why we needed to spend so much money to fly by the moon, but I’m really impressed by this mission! It’s nice to feel amazed by what human intelligence can achieve again.
I hope you find a good solution for your giant suet feeder and get graced by another Pileated Woodpecker visit! I see other woodpeckers around my neighborhood, but I’ve only ever seen a Pileated in Florida!
Artemis II . . . gives me so much joy these days. I had no idea it would, although I shouldn’t be surprised as a I was absolutely mesmerized by All Things Space Exploration as a child of the 1960s. It’s glorious! And . . . I think a nod to your beautiful, star-filled bandana. That is also a joyous endeavor that you’re going to love wearing. (And in the great minds think alike department, I’m starting Theo of Golden today!) Have fun watching your Pileated! They do fly-bys here in my neighborhood now and then, but not often. We have them by the flock up north, though! Always a treat to see them — and especially to hear them! Enjoy!
I too have been enjoying the wonder that is coming from Artemis II. You’ll finish your bandana before I will, but isn’t it a treat to work on? I finished that long bit of reverse applique while talking to my niece on the phone this week.
I have the new Tana French on hold. I can’t not read it, but don’t want to end my Cal Hooper journey either.
I am equally if not more excited about the woodpecker, that’s so cool!
I haven’t been able to watch much, but I did tune in for the launch… and got pretty emotional about it! I, too, was right back to my childhood, remembering my teacher bringing her portable b&w TV from home so we could watch the rocket launches. (She’s the same teacher who played anything & everything Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops during Friday “free” time… I didn’t appreciate her then as I do now.)
That is very neat about the new bird. My local book read Theo of Golden last month and I also took my time with it. I am looking forward to the sequel whenever it comes out.
lol the mind boggles at how big and heavy this suet feeder is. I’m sure you’ll treat us to a look see once you have it installed- within sight of at least one of your windows I hope.
Theo of Golden seems to be the book everyone is talking about at the moment. I’m still way down the list at the library as well as on Libby. All good things come to those who wait!
I’m really grateful for the joy and hope I’ve been getting from Artemis II! I’ve been avoiding Theo of Golden because of the Christian/evangelical undertones so I’m definitely interested in your take on it. Pileated woodpeckers are amazing, I’m thrilled that you have one visiting your yard!
A little bling now and then won’t go amiss. You will have fun wearing that bandana. Just wow to the pileated woodpecker in your yard. I’ll be interested to know whether you can attract another. I remember being in grade school when Alan Shepherd went into space in the space capsule atop a rocket. My teacher wheeled a TV monitor into the classroom on a tall cart and it ran in the background during the time he was in space.
I hear them in my backyard woods but I never see them! How exciting. In the summer I can’t put suet out because of the raccoon that is our sweet neighbor. I do thistle in one feeder and safflower in another feeder.
