Hello, December | 2023

December’s wintery breath is already clouding the pond, frosting the pane, obscuring summer’s memory. ― John Geddes

Hello dear December… I feel both that it took you no time and a long time to arrive. And I find that is much of what you are about… holding two opposing thoughts together at the same time.

Cold is synonymous with December and those balmy summer nights seem like another lifetime ago. I do love the hushed stillness of a dark winter night. And though Sherman’s evening walk might be colder… the delight of all the twinkling lights of December in the neighbors yards makes our evening stroll one I very much look forward to! Granted, the noisy whir of the motors powering the “blow up” decorations overpowers the quiet, I still appreciate the neighborly efforts that make for a very festive walk.

But I do have some things that I both need and want to accomplish this month:

  1. Knit a few more wee Gnome Ornaments. They are a fun and easy knit… so their completion is not daunting and entirely doable this month.
  2. My December Mystery Gnome… the last clue always comes on the 24th… and I look forward to the way Sarah helps me ease toward that day!
  3. Swatch for a vest for Steve. I found a pattern which might be the backwards way to go about this… but he is so picky about clothes that finding one he likes was the biggest hurdle. I have the yarn, now I just need to “make it work”… which I am confident I can as long as I am close!
  4. Test drive a new schedule for The Making of the Sourdough Bread… I am testing out the new schedule this weekend, so hopefully my “time” math works for a Sunday morning bake!
  5. Paint… my class has started and I have my first lesson “masked” and ready to go. It is the ONLY thing on my list today! Yes, I am nervous! Haha

And I think that is MORE than enough for any December! What about you? What are you hoping to accomplish this month?

Have a great weekend, everyone! See you all back here on Monday!

I have so enjoyed reading the flurry of “Current Updates” in the blogisphere, I thought I would join in and share a little slice of my world as 2019 winds down. I was surprised to see that I had not done one of these updates since June! It makes me smile to see where I was on the first day of summer – especially since we will welcome winter on Saturday! Okay, maybe someone will be up to welcome it at 11:19 PM EST but I promise you, I will be tucked into my cozy, warm bed!

Contemplating:

My word for next year! Focus has been so very good that part of me wants to “stay in the zone” for 2020, but I think I can drill into it a bit – take what I have learned through focus and apply it specifically into areas of my life that focus has shown to have issues. I am thinking about purpose/purposeful and intention/intentional.

Watching:

Un Village Français, courtesy of my library. I am just in season one, but it is fascinating to watch life just after German occupation in 1941 in the village of Villeneuve. I know I say this all the time, but I truly adore my library and the vast number of options I have to watch, read, and listen!

Reading:

Speaking of reading, I do not know where the recommendation came from – but I am reading One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow by Olivia Hawker. I love when a book sucks you in from the very first paragraph! I am about 1/3 of the way in and enjoying it tremendously – it might even be causing me to stay up just a wee bit later to read “just one more chapter”!

Savoring:

These December days – we are halfway through the month, with the best half yet to come! And, I am spending them enjoying all the subtleties of the season! The lights, the music, and especially those moments of unexpected good will in curious places – like the grocery store!

Knitting:

Yes, we got a dusting of snow overnight! WOO!!

Crazily, I have some delusion that I can finish a pair of mittens to match this headband that I knit over the weekend. Yes – I translated the pattern and figured out how to double-knit – now I am feverishly knitting a pair of matching mittens. If I can get these done today – I can make one more trip to the post office tomorrow and they *might* make it to Michigan in time for Christmas! If all that fails – then I can add them to whatever we send Vivi for Valentine’s Day!

Planning:

Some selfish making in January! All this gift knitting will be done, and I have plans to do some sewing – including a Day of Pinning and Cutting Out All The Things in the week between Christmas and New Year!

There you have what’s current in my life! What about you? What’s your favorite current thing?

Welcome December | 2019

Welcome December | 2019

How did it get so late so soon? – Dr. Seuss

Ahh, December! In a whirl, you are here with your darkening, colder days.

But December you also bring Christmas trees, twinkle lights, carols, the best bits of childhood memories!

There is gift giving, with the hopes that you got just the perfect gift for loved ones near and far!

December, what you be without some last-minute rush knitting! (Yes… a phone call from my son has compelled me to knit a tiny bit more so queue up those Christmas movies! lol)

And December, you bring my birthday, although I think I am a bit less enthusiastic about its arrival than I was when I was little!

Finally, Dear December, I hope that you will still bring a good helping of that “child-like wonder” to your magical days!
