Means a cooler start to the week! And the mornings are so dark now. The tables have turned and instead of the sun waiting for me to rise… I am waiting for the sun, which just might be the perfect way to ease into the week.
These words by Jericho Brown have lingered with me since I listened to them last week on The Slow Down and, like Jericho, “I am in a mood about America.”
Googling, I found this reading by Alfre Woodard to share with you all! Each time I hear the poem, something different speaks to me.
And, of course, the NYTimes did a lovely piece about this poem (and if you subscribe, you can hear Jericho read his poem to you!)
Happy Monday everyone!
I love the dark mornings! I have to get my book light out for my bible reading 🙂 Here’s hoping your week is a good week ahead!!
A leather bound book, lavender gin, and good bread sound like delicious luxuries! This is a wonderful and expressive poem, and I thank you for sharing it, Kat.
What a great poem (and yes to lavender gin, leather bound books and delicious bread!). Thank you for sharing.
I am a little sad to now be waking up before the sun, but I am loving the cooler weather! It is actually making me look forward to my run because I know I won’t feel so much like I am dying because of the heat!
It was so nice to throw open the windows this morning. The cool breeze is very welcome here after such a humid stretch.
Listening to Alfre Woodard makes me realize how much more I get from *listening* to poetry than reading it. Thank you. I sat and listened to her with my eyes closed. Smiled. A few little laughs. And a moan. The bus…
Wow–Alfre Woodard is amazing!
I hope this week treats you well. I have noticed sunset coming earlier and leaves falling. Hard to believe we are in the middle of September but then this pandemic time is a paradox.
Thank you for sharing this poem. What a world! I’m also in a mood about America….
I’m struggling with the shortening of the days, even though fall is totally my season. I can’t stay awake!!
It’s so nice to have the windows open, isn’t it?
(And hearing poetry read aloud is such a treat.)
We have had the heat return to us this week, temperatures that are high for us but I suspect would be cool for you. I am loving wearing sandals again, I have dusted off my summer clothes…..
Thank you for sharing the poem and the reading of it, wonderful, just wonderful.
GAH- feedly didn’t show me this post! …still, it’s good for a Tuesday afternoon (and will likely be relevant for any day. period). Thank you! (also, I have bourbon in my glass 😉 maybe, just maybe the season is changing!)
