The Importance of Being Educated

There has been sadly little in the news recently on education.

However, unemployment makes the headlines daily, and with good reason as a large portion of our citizenry is either unemployed or under-employed.

How little we think of unemployment and education being vitally important to each other…and then last week I came across an article about employment and a company’s woes as it tried to hire some 1300 people and their lament of only being able to find less than a hundred whom they could employ. Why, you ask? It is easy, less than 100 applicants could pass the simple 9th grade mathematics exam for employment! That is correct, Gentle Reader, they have some 1300 positions they are trying to fill but cannot find workers who are capable of doing the work because they cannot do 9th grade math!

Remembering Our Roots…

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she’
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

On this the 234th anniversary of our boldly declaring our independence from England, I think it is important to spend a few moments remembering our roots and examine what actually makes these United States of America so incredibly amazing.

What I believe makes this land so remarkable is its rich diversity.

My ancestors immigrated here from the Netherlands and Germany leaving their motherlands for far and distant shores seeking freedom and a chance at a new life exactly as the founders of this great land did.

Sadly, a growing faction believes that we should close the golden door to those who seek to go through it in the search of freedom and an opportunity at a new life.

When Hemlock is the cure for what ails you…

When Hemlock is the cure for what ails you…

After what seemed like a series of knitting failures, it sure is nice to be able to share with you all a knitting success.

I started Jared Flood’s Hemlock Ring Blanket some months ago and after making a series of mistakes knitting in the dark sitting in patients rooms, I had put it away and you know what they say about “out of sight”…

Well, I pulled it back out in May, frogged it and began again.

It now resides in its new home with my friend StevoFC and he loves it.

He took most of these lovely photos so that I could share them with you all.

Thanks for making my Hemlock Ring shine, Steve.

Perhaps you would like some cheese to go with that whine…

The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. ~ Lord Jeffrey

I have noted some trends lately on a few of the blogs I occasionally read regarding an increase in the amount of whining the writers have been doing.

A marked increase in fact, about a plethora of things infecting the blogosphere and clogging my blog reader. Sadly, whining is not limited to blogs either, the social networks I participate in are filled with whining posts.

My idea of heaven is a great big baked potato and someone to share it with. ~ Oprah Winfrey

It has been an amazing week here at Casa del KatKnits and while there were not any baked potatoes, much was shared; from the quaintness of Saugatuck to the grandeur of Lake Michigan to my favorite food spots and having my best friend experience them all with me truly did make this week heaven.

Yesterday we headed north to visit Grand Haven and the day was perfect. You can see some of my pictures on Flickr of the sights from the day.

I even managed to squeeze in some baking so I could send some cookies home with Steve.
